Petit Crenn is coming to Melbourne: an all-day French address to watch

Melbourne has another French address to put on its watchlist, but not yet on its list of places to visit tonight. Petit Crenn is announced for October 2026 at 495 Collins Street, in a partnership between chef Dominique Crenn and Salter Brothers.

The useful detail is the format. The partners are planning a small, all-day venue, with coffee and pastries in the morning, lunch, and cocktails from the afternoon into the evening. For someone following Crenn’s work, this is an announcement about everyday French bistro cooking rather than a published tasting-menu itinerary.

What has been announced?

In its media release dated 9 September, Salter Brothers describes a 40-seat venue inspired by Parisian comptoirs. Crenn has led the creative design with support from the partner’s design team, drawing on her home region of Brittany.

The announcement also describes a five-person standing table at the rear, called Le Contour, intended to give guests a close view of the kitchen. That is a distinctive detail to look out for when booking information arrives; the release does not explain how that space will be reserved or priced.

Crenn is the chef and co-owner of Atelier Crenn in San Francisco. The partners identify Petit Crenn as her first Australian venue. The Melbourne concept, however, deserves to be read on its own terms: a small room with several possible uses across the day, not a promise that every visit will follow the same format.

A first look at the food, not a finished menu

The preview names steak tartare with egg yolk jam and sauce au poivre, and a croque madame with jambon and gruyère. It also points to seasonal tartines, composed salads and daily French classics.

Those are the team’s announced dishes and direction, not food that MenuRoom has tasted. They give diners something more useful than a celebrity name alone: an initial sense of whether to follow the opening for a morning stop, a bistro lunch or a later visit. Exact service hours and the final menu still need checking when released.

What to check before making plans

As of our 25 September check, the restaurant’s own website says “coming soon”. The partner’s release gives October as the launch month and says that the exact opening date, menu and key team appointments will be announced closer to launch.

No menu prices are provided in the two official pages checked for this article. That means there is no basis here for calling it a budget option, estimating a bill or comparing its value with other Melbourne restaurants.

For now, save the official Petit Crenn website and check back for a firm date, opening hours, menu and reservation details before travelling. This is a forthcoming opening, not a report that service has begun.
